-- A LANTERN LIT

It is believed that a variety of symbols were used in guiding some enslaved people to escape. Often, the person on the run would be on his or her own with no help at all, and no symbols to guide him or her and no notion of places to stay. But the Underground Railroad network did have some "safe houses" where these people would he housed and fed for the day (they usually traveled by night). Sometimes a  lantern, or perhaps a candle  was put in or near a window.  This was a well guarded secret, but perhaps there were some bounty hunters who  might have caught on or there was  a risk that these hunters would figure it out. For that reason, many of these "safe houses" or "stations," as they were called, had hiding places. It is likely that once an enslaved runaway was in the station, the lantern was taken out of the window.

In this song, some enslaved people are being given instructions by two abolitionists.

Sung by Soprano, Sigal Chen, accompanied on piano by Dr. Jonathan Dzik

Instrumental performed by Bernie Katzman

Lyrics

A lantern lit, a lantern lit dimly
On a window sill.
Will tell you that, residing inside
Are people of good will.
And then you'll know, that it is safe enough
For you to knock upon the door.
You'll find shelter there, some  guidance,
The hope you're looking for.

Instrumental

(begins again at 1.26 seconds into the song)

The people there, will care for you,
They'll direct you on your way.
To another station safe house..for the next day.

1.49 seconds
Your journey can be perilous.
You take risks that are severe.
But be comforted to know each step will bring...
Freedom near.

2.09 seconds
A lantern lit, a  lantern lit dimly,
Tells you in that place.
Are people who'll
Protect you from,
Some dangers that you face.

Those kindly folk, will care enough, and they'll
Help you on your way.
 To another station safe house,
For the next day.

For the next day
